High Contrast Mode on the pitch

EA's High Contrast Mode recolours the match so players, the ball and the pitch separate more clearly. You can customise team and ball colours and reduce pitch saturation, and player and stadium shadows can be switched off to remove visual clutter. EA notes that pitch saturation and stadium shadows cannot be changed from the pause menu, so set them before kick-off.

Colour blindness filters come in Protanopia, Deuteranopia and Tritanopia profiles, each with an intensity from 0 to 10 (6 by default). Brightness, contrast, player indicator colour and indicator size are adjustable too. Our vision guide explains how filters and high contrast differ.

Brightness and contrast settings, together with the High Contrast Mode, may help players with low vision follow a fast-moving ball, while the indicator over the controlled player can be enlarged so it is easy to see who you are controlling.

One Button and Two Button layouts, and where they stop

There are four controller layouts: Classic (the default), Alternate, Two Button and One Button. The simplified layouts reduce how many inputs a player needs, which can help with limited hand movement or with learning the game. EA states that competitive online games cannot be played with the One or Two Button layouts, so these suit offline and casual play.

Buttons can be remapped within the Classic and Alternate schemes, and mouse and keyboard players get larger clickable targets. If you use an adaptive controller, the console's own remapping can sit on top of this; see our PS5 settings guide and Xbox settings guide.

In our editorial view, the simplified layouts are worth trying first with a new or younger player, then moving to Classic or Alternate once the basics are familiar. Because online competitive modes require a full layout, it is sensible to check which modes the player most wants before settling on a scheme.

Assists that work like a difficulty dial

Rather than one difficulty slider, FC 27 has many assists. Auto shots and assisted headers, several levels of shot and passing assistance, defending assists such as auto clearances and jockey help, automatic player switching and simplified skill moves can each be set to suit the player. For a child or a player with slower reactions, turning several of these up changes the game considerably.

Subtitles have five sizes, from Extra Small to Extra Large, five colours and an optional dark background.

Analog sprint and trigger effects are adjustable, which can reduce how finely a player has to control pressure on a trigger. EA also lists separate volume sliders for commentary, stadium ambience and music, which can help players who need commentary louder or quieter than crowd noise.

A sensible approach for a family is to start with most assists on, play a few matches, then switch individual assists off one at a time as confidence grows. Changing one setting at a time makes it easier to tell which change helped.

Narration and chat transcription: check your region

EA lists Menu Narration, Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text, but marks them as North America only, and says the page as a whole is based on the North American English version for PC and consoles. UK players should therefore check the in-game Accessibility menu to see what is available on their copy, and use the console's own screen reader if menu narration is missing.

The age rating also needs a mention. The PEGI database shows FC 27 rated PEGI 16; earlier entries in the series carried lower ratings, so parents should check the current descriptor on PEGI's site before buying for a younger child.

If narration is not available in the UK version, PS5 Screen Reader, Xbox Narrator and Windows Narrator can read parts of the interface; see our Windows gaming accessibility guide for PC.

As with any online game, voice chat can be turned off in console family settings for younger players.
